Sourcing cotton is typically a draining and wasteful process, needing 20,000 liters for just two pounds of cotton. With non-organic cotton sheets as the norm in many households, imagine the waste and water used for your king-sized bed alone! But there are sustainable (and even softer) alternatives: Tencel and bamboo.
Bamboo and Tencel (from eucalyptus) are both grown sustainably without the use of pesticides or insecticides. Using just a fraction of the water needed for sourcing, these eco-friendly alternatives can thrive in areas not typically suited for agriculture. Not only are they porous and hypoallergenic, but they are also antibacterial, moisture-wicking, and some of the softest fibers around. Because of their more sustainable production practices, they are sometimes slightly more expensive than traditional cotton. But while the lower impact on our natural resources is worth the cost alone, the fact is that bamboo sheets are also more durable and breathable than cotton. This is an upgrade that’s made to last.
We’ve found nine bamboo and Tencel sheets that are as eco-friendly as they are luxurious. You’ll never sleep the same again. If you’re looking to upgrade your whole sleep situation, check out our guides to natural and eco-friendly mattresses and organic pillows!
