In today’s fast-paced world places a heavy emphasis on pharmaceuticals and productivity, many of us are looking for alternative modalities to keep us grounded. Whether you’re hoping to heal from past traumas or to gain confidence and unlock self-love, one of the most popular alternative therapy options is using crystals.

Crystals have been valued for thousands of years and many tout the healing properties behind them — but what exactly are they and how should you shop for them? Let’s explore.

What are crystals, exactly?

Crystals are natural mineral formations believed to have metaphysical properties to support physical, emotional, and mental health. Per the Smithsonian, “Each crystal starts small and grows as more atoms are added. Many grow from water rich in dissolved minerals, but they also grow from melted rock and even vapor. Under the influence of different temperatures and pressures, atoms combine in an amazing array of crystal shapes.”

While there aren’t many scientific studies (yet) on the power of crystals, we often find that their presence can support stress relief or calming anxiety. A few healing stones are even known to benefit mental health like amethyst, rose quartz, and obsidian.

Unfortunately, not all crystals are safe to keep around — unvetted crystals can include toxic or radioactive materials like uranium or thorium, so it’s vital to do your due diligence when purchasing. Luckily, the nine online shops we’ve found below use conscious, traceable sourcing for their stones — we hope you find what you need and that these crystals bring whatever your dreams entail (or ward off what they don’t).

Our criteria:

Our editors have researched and vetted all of the brands on this guide, including scouring hundreds of consumer reviews, to make sure they conform to the highest standards. We update this list regularly with brands that meet the following criteria:

  • CONSCIOUSLY SOURCED | The sellers below go to great lengths to ensure stones are thoughtfully and ethically sourced from around the world, working directly with vendors and partners, and offering fair wages and safe working conditions.
  • HIGH QUALITY | The crystals below are of the highest quality, whether found in the raw form or as polished and pointed stones. As part of the sellers’ commitment to conscious sourcing, they’re often fully traceable as well to guarantee quality.
  • INFORMATIVE | The shops we’ve featured have a long history of understanding, teaching, and practicing crystal work — they’re intentional in their inventory and the education they can offer about the stones they carry and their respective healing properties.
